In launching &lt;a href="http://www.crossfitwc.com/"&gt;CrossFit West Chester&lt;/a&gt; with three great partners I had to divert energy from combatives training to getting our training facility in West Chester, PA open and stable.  Now that things are normalizig, (Is that even a word?), I am looking to get some momentum and contiue to offer the best in personal safety training.  The difference now is I have a home base as well as continued seminar and workshop offerings throughout Penssylvania and surrounding region.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have opened up my calendar book and started scheduling training oppurtunities. You should know what your personal tools are. You should know how to use every natural weapon on your body. You should know what the targets are on your opponent’s body—which places are the best ones to hit. You should learn what the most desirable targets are for the tool you’re using. Combine tool and target and the result and whatever you do becomes the tactic. Let the opponent and their targets inspire your counter. If you fixate on your shin kick or knee thrust or elbow strike in advance of the problem, you can’t flow. You’re not as spontaneous. Now, we make a distinction between technique and techniques. We do have technique, meaning we learn about neuromuscular communication, how to use the right muscles at the right time, like which part of your shin bone you should hit with, or how to rotate your hips for maximum effect and so on. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is out numbered 8-1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an unarmed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come in. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;But he's coming anyway. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;And he drops it in, and sits there in a hail of machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;And he kept coming back again and again, 13 more times and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. &lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died on Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at the age of 80 in Boise, ID. It happens to all of us, about getting "in shape", losing weight, learning to use a firearm, shopping for better car insurance. We experience a stimulus and respond. We dig through our summer wardrobe to find that last years shorts are too tight. We get that monthly bill and think I can do better. We watch a video, read a new clipping, or worse have someone we care about fall victim to violence. I should really take some 'self defense lessons' or get a gun, etc...Unlike taking some time to loose some weight, or research how to save a buck violence is something none of us can afford. You can bury your head in the sand, you can put it off but that doesn't make you safer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look deeper and how many times have we walked through an area where are senses were heightened, we see an unfamiliar face coming towards us, the uncomfortable feeling starts, we're not sure what to do, the heart starts beating faster, our body 'perceives' some type of threat, it picks up and we feel 'anxious'. This approaching figure 'looks shady' what else are you thinking? We hope nothing happens to us, we pray, or we tell ourselves we'll be fine. It happens to all of us it's called fear. For those keeping up with me know I have been searching for the right place to offer training on a regular basis.  I found it in partnering with &lt;a href="http://crossfitwc.typepad.com/crossfit_west_chester/"&gt;CrossFit West Chester&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It looks like a July 1st opening date and I am so excited!  I am working with some really cool people that share my passion about training.  Being involved with Blauer Tactical and being there when Coach Blauer opened his new training center in Virginia Beach, VA I knew that is what I wanted to bring to the people I trained, on a much much smaller scale of course:)  But what a cool model, the best of both worlds under one roof!  If yov've never been there or at least seen pictures its a great place with a cool eletric energy there that just makes you feel like you are a part of something great. Zach, one of Rob's trainers, had been to the previous seminar at CFDV and had some great insight.  One thing that stood out for me was to watch, how after one exposure, how Zach was able to jump in and out of the drills and self correct. Firearms Training and (in my humble opinion) the BEST conditioning program available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Currently I teach firarms at my current employ focusing on training new corrections staff in the basic use of firearms.  I started my firearms training by attending a National Rifle Association Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Course.  My passion for training and wanting to do the best for the people I serve motivates me to continue with the student mindset and research various gun disciplines.  There are many gun owners out there but some who are afraid to own a gun or don't have the proper training to use a firearm to it's fullest capacity.  this has lead me to begin to share what I have learned in firearms trainig to both Law Enforcement and peace loving, law abiding citizens.  Currently I will begin with offering Basic Pistol, Basic Shotgun &lt;em&gt;(hands down the best and most misunderstood home defense weaon today!)&lt;/em&gt;, Personal Protection in the Home, and Home Firearm Safety.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Conditioning course is something that is somewhat selfish but applicable to the personal protection, self imporvement, self empowerment journey.  In the PDR program a principle of 'Capacity vs. Potential' is introduced.  Plainly stated, "&lt;em&gt;Capacity is what you bring to the fight right now! Focusing on 'potential' moves you (and removes you) from the 'here &amp; now' where we must be to perform optimally. Potential is either in the past or future, capacity is what you bring to the fight NOW.  Example (I used to be a great wrestler in high school.  If I work out more I will be in better shape)&lt;/em&gt;." - taken from BTS PDR presentation&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So now if you accept I am only as good as I am right now, if I have any integrity don't I owe it to myself to make myself better.  How can we do that?  One way that is very simple is through conditioning.  Not bodybuilding or training for an Iron Man Triatholon but true, fitness for the realitites of everyday life which include basic safety.  Not just death matches but tripping and falling or picking something up and putting it on a shelf or protecting yourself.  If all things are equal between you and the bad guy but the bad guy is stronger who has the advantage.  Now I often discuss in the self-defense seminars how not to let the numbers beat you and not to give your opponenet any unproven attributes.  This is where skill, knowledge, tactics, and strategy come in.  But take away all the benefits of overall health like feeling better and not being sick as much which relays into an overall better quality of life what is the argument against.  Not to mention the personal protection component of looking in shape makes you a harder target, the confidence that comes with the right program sends out signals to tell the bad guys to stay away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the 1920's a fitness advocate by the name of Earle E. Liederman published a number of books and articles on what was then referred to as physical culture.  Liederman wrote that the average man should be able to do the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  · Be able to swim at least half a mile or more;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  · Be able to run at top speed two hundred yards or more;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  · Be able to jump over obstacles higher than your waist;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  · Be in condition to pull your body upward by the strength of your arms, until&lt;br /&gt;    your chin touches your hands, at least 15 to 20 times;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  · Be able to dip between parallel bars or between two chairs at least 25 times or&lt;br /&gt;    more. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;If a man can accomplish these things,' Liederman said, 'he need have no fear concerning the safety of his life should he be forced into an emergency from which he alone may be able to save himself.”&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The CrossFit program is something I have long reserached and have found it to be the most effcient, safest, way to achieve dramatic and significant changes in work capacity, body composition, endurance, flexability, strength, stamina, cardio vascular capactiy, power, balance, agility, and accuracy. I ahve been following this program for myself and at soon to be 39 I can honestly say I am in the best condition of my entire life. SYSTEM&lt;/a&gt;™ (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response). When the average person thinks of Law Enforcement most people think of their local and state police forces. Working in Corrections I often find that I encouter the same scope of duties but framed in a different enviroment or with differing objectives so when attending law enforcement focused trainings I often feel out on the fringe and have to adapt what is being taught to my duties and objecitves. Park Rangers are often faced with the same duties in their mission, keeping the peace and enforcing the rules and laws pertaining to their jurisdiction, serving the public expectation to keep their parks safe and doing it all with a smile. With 9 full time rangers in attendance it was a testament to how adaptable the &lt;a href="http://www.tonyblauer.com/4105/02_01_01_spearsystem.asp" target="_self"&gt;S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM&lt;/a&gt;™ is. For those with some exposure to any of my training courses you are familiar with the 3-Step Tackle Drill. Instead of extracting a subject from a car the scenario became pulling somone from a park bench or seated from thier tackle box, dealing with improvised weapons like a fishing poll. The camp was not only the biggest, it was the best by far, and the BTS Training Center is the most amazing facility I have ever seen!The weekend started Friday night for the 135 in attendance with an inspirational talk from CrossFit founder Greg Glassman (&lt;a href="https://webmail.montcopa.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://CrossFit.com" target="_blank"&gt;CrossFit.com&lt;/a&gt;) on why CrossFit and S.P.E.A.R. work so well together. That was followed on Saturday morning by the largest workout I have ever been apart of when Brendan Gilliam (&lt;a href="https://webmail.montcopa.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.crossfitnsc.com/brendan.html" target="_blank"&gt;https://webmail.montcopa.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.crossfitnsc.com/brendan.html&lt;/a&gt;) took over 100 attendees through a CrossFit workout, it was just an awesome sight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tony Blauer and his team then took the camp through several hours of concepts and drills. The camp was made up of roughly equal parts military, law enforcement, and general public. One of the most impressive aspects of the training was the universal applicability of the S.P.E.A.R. System for each group regardless of experience level. Coach Blauer's ability to seamlessly relate the material to each group is just amazing, and a tribute to the system he created.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Saturday culminated with an excellent MMA class by UFC fighter Joe Lauzon, who was also universally praised for his teaching prowess.Sunday began with an intense Combat Conditioning workout that blended CrossFit concepts with the S.P.E.A.R. Systems behaviorally based drills.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The remainder of day consisted of training drills including the X-Axis Shin Kick and Saving Private Ryan drills plus an overview of the importance of mindset by Coach Blauer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This year's camp ended as always with a Ballistic Micro Fight demo by members of the PDR Team and S.P.E.A.R. Instructors showing just how realistic training can get in High Gear.Everyone, I spoke to at the end of the weekend planned on attending more training ASAP, several inquired about joining the PDR Team so they could start teaching the general public, and many of the LEO's and military personnel in attendance where interested in attending the S.P.E.A.R. I have over 16 years of martial arts experience, and at 4th Dan I found myself getting complacent with my techniques and training. The course Saturday was on Vehicle Tactics. Besides the weather the course was well run and an eye opener at the very least! Bob instructed the attendees on the deficiencies on a vehicle as a weapons platform, moving from the vehicle and engaging targets, engaging from inside the vehicle and more. Training in a variety of skill sets in never ceases to amaze me how emphasis on the simple things makes all the difference. As an example we were run through several drills just exiting and drawing dry fire. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I recommend attending one of Argive Defense's courses especially the vehicle tactics class for LEO or civilian. If your serious about personal safety and utilize a firearm as a personal defense tool you have to address real world scenarios and the issues that they present, Argive Defense does that and more. This course will center around vehicle tactics and is open to the public. I am a NRA certified Law Enforcement Firearms instructor for Handgun &amp;amp; Shotgun and met Mr. Castle at a training workshop at a Corrections based training weekend called the OLETC Mock Riot. As an instructor I have seen lots of "trick" shooting high speed stuff. All that stuff is great to watch and try but when the day is over you have to be able to convey those skills to the end user in a minimal amount of time. The CAR system does just that. In this post I'll attempt to explain my feelings about the meaning behind the first part of the name. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;For example intuition or the sixth sense. We put all kinds of labels to it, yet there is no real proven scientific explanation for it. (I recommend Gavin DeBecker's books, in particular "The Gift of Fear", on learning more about the awesome protective mechanism the intuition really can be when we learn how to use it.) There have been some psychological explanations for what the intuition is, how our subconscious calls on past experiences learned, to then frame potential hazard. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The startle/flinch response is another genetically wired physiological response to danger. As stated by Blauer Tactical systems research, depending on how aggressive, how sudden or fast, and the proximity of a stimulus will elicit a certain type of physiological response using our arms or legs to cringe in to protect the most vital part of our physical selves to survive, our brain. View an act of someone being on the ground and kicked in the stomach and you will notice they curl up and protect their head even though the attacks are directed at the body. No one has to be told to curl into a fetal position we just do it, naturally. A slower stimulus may bring about a response of pushing danger away. Visualize for a moment unknowingly walking through a spider web. What do most people do move away from the direction we felt the web as it stuck to our face, hands coming up to get it off of us. How do you walk through a room? Head first, backwards, or with hands out to push away any danger to our command center, our brain.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Understanding that we have been endowed with a natural alarm system (intuition), and physical protection (startle flinch response) is a huge leap from complex motor skill based self defense system. Knowing this should be a litmus test for choosing a self defense program, firearms training, or any physical skill set.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Whether you believe in nature or creation, how empowering to know you have these protective measures hard wired into your system?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;The second meaning is "The act of providing or preparing for the future use or application, a making ready, a preparation." I have tried to adopt the overkill mentality and applied it to my teaching philosophy and my personal training. To do more then what the bad guy is doing, in planning, fitness,...whatever. To be prepared for the worst. It's like the story about the ant, one stores away his food preparing for winter while the other plays the summer away. Not everyone is born with this or learns it which is why we as a society have become dependant on the system to protect us, to provide. When it comes to your safety the police are reactive not proactive they just can't be. Do you really want to trust your safety to someone else in the heat of the moment when the danger is bearing down on you it's to late to think about it. You have to store your nuts NOW!
